another geezer pitching her hat in the ring....

in no particular order:
Mekons - O'Cayz Corral, Madison, WI May '87 -- as intense as any wake for a sudden death, as joyful as any homecoming, as rockin' as any one chord punker and twice as much fun!

Lyres - Cavestomp, Brooklyn, NY Nov '08 -- god, what a treat to see Jeff C back doing what he loves best sans drama. a knot of us at the edge of the stage under his organ, pinching each other.. is he REALLY this good?

Chowder Shouters - Roxy, Atlanta, GA NYE '87 - a primitive country caterwauling duo back when the only other duo around was the Flat Duo Jets before their first release... extra charming when the drummer banged that snare so hard it bounced off the rack and rolled across stage... he casually sauntered over to where it had rolled, strolled back to plop it back, and continued ever so nonchalant... opened my eyes to the unpredictable charms of modern primitive rockers.

oh golly, I'm rilly rlly old. can't stop at three...
Dexter Romweber - Lunch Paper, Athens, GA Jun '06 - on the eve of the local screening of Two Headed Cow he proved that he had the mettle to hold that stage all by his lonesome...

Question Mark & the Mysterians - either the show @ the Star Bar, Atlanta, GA '97 or mebbe Ponderosa Stomp '08 when I didn't expect they could be any better...

Cynics/Subsonics - Clermont Lounge, Atlanta, GA '92 or '93? -- Michael matching moves with the tragic titty dancers...

Blasters - Drive Invasion, Atlanta '07 -- in dusky light under the big screen, girls hula hooping on the outskirts of the crowd, fireworks popping down the hill, and Phil Alvin and co, absolutely transcendent!

Bettye LaVette - Five Spot Atlanta, GA Feb '06, I think... right after her first Anti release... it was her 60th birthday... 44 years after she'd played her very first club gig at teh Royal Peacock over on Auburn Ave... and she had us all in her sassy little hands... at times me crying - which was no fluke cuz my crusty rock crit buddy was shedding more'n a few tears 'imself.

Alarm Clocks/Reigning Sound/Tough & Lovely Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland, OH Mar '06 -- might've been a big departure from Greg C's usual precision, but on this night, he was celebrating having just seen the Alarm Clocks and threw down a joyously sloppy set for all of his friends who had traveled from near and far to be there. It turned into a big grand night for us garage travelers to bond once again... cuz as one of us observed, some us have known each other for like 10,15 years despite never having lived in each other's towns... and we come together for these kinds of shows, make new friends, get hip to new bands, and on that night, the new to me band was the Tough & Lovely... great band that really does have to get out more!

there have been so many amazing shows over the years... impossible to pick just three - or even nine . . . ;)

3.The Dead Boys+Ramones+Heartbreakers - New York City 1987-88? (at the Ritz? or some hall that closed down after the gig....people were ripping seats and parts of the stage as souvenirs)

The Miracle Workers - White Trash au Go Go Hollywood, Ca. 1987
The Untold Fables - Halloween Anti-club Hollywood, Ca. 1986

In Particular Order

The Monks - Wild Wekend Spain or London - Both Amazing gigs of equal proportion. -2004
The Pretty Things - This was in a small blues club with a very low stage, so we practically stood on top of them, they played all the greats and we hung out with them after, drinking till the early hours - amazing - 1993
The Sonics (London) Not the best sound but fuck it was The Sonics! - 2008

More than three: The Creation - Camden/ The Cramps - Astoria/ The Dammned - Yeovil (which meant we could hang out with them for a bit after the show (no Rat though)/ Love - Southampton (Another up close gig))/ The Phantom Surfers - Wild Weekend/ The Seeds - Bristol (Just fantastic form)/ The Fuzztones - London

The Sonics @ Cave Stomp - I actually only saw their first show, but it still floored me!

The Stooges @ Little Steven's Underground Garage Fest. '04 - Playing for the fuck of it, or $, but at least not pushing an awful reunion record. I'm fried...deeeeeeeep fried...

Radio Birdman @ The Bluebird Theater, Denver '07 - Best come back ever! uh...the year? Whatever, it was freakin' AWSOME.

Since some have added extras...

Mary Weiss w/ The Reigning Sound @ SXSW '07

The Alarm Clocks @ Southpaw, NY '06

Dick Dale @ The Gothic Theater, Denver '07

Damn Gun Club, I would fucking die to have seen them. However, I was four years old at the time...

I was right, Black Lips fucking rocked!!! King Khan put on a hell of a show and he wandered the stage during the whole Black Lips set. BBQ even came out for a song... Great fucking show.

Let me know if anyone made it to the Crypt records anniversary show with King Khan and BBQ Show.. I wanted to go so fucking bad but couldn't make it...

The Woggles - This years Primitive festival in Rotterdam

The first time I saw The Solarflares at Blow Up in London, 2001

The Blades gig in the Olympia, Dublin when they briefly reformed 2003.

Loads of other great gigs over the years but they're the ones that jump to mind.

Would of love to have seen The Blades live. Saw a couple of great clips of the band on YouTube the other year which sadly have been taken down now. I did hear awhile back that Reekus Records were planning to put out a Blades rarities CD and there was talk of maybe a reunion gig or two. But heard nothing since then.

Anyway, my top 3 gigs -

1) Love - Forever Changes tour Newcastle Opera House. Simply magical.

2) The kinks - Middlesbrough Town Hall. First ever gig I saw way back in 1984 when I was just 13 years old. Even got to talk to Ray Davies after the gig. You can read more about the gig on my latest MySpace blog - http://www.myspace.com/redstar_recordings

3) The Prisoners - King Charles Hotel Gillingham. The very last time that all 4 members played together.

The Ramones, The Ruts, The Damned all seen here in the Netherlands. To bad about the singer of the Ruts that he killed himself. Couldn't stand the pressure I guess. The Damned was the line up during their "Machine Gun Etiquette" tour. The Ramones I saw when Tommy just left the band. Album 3 was just out. Those were the days......................
