Curious to hear what some other people might suggest to be the best garage or punk bands of recent times? Mostly I stay listening to older bands but it's good to know about the current ones to keep up with the good live acts when they come around if you like going out to concerts.

As far as "true" garage bands go, I think the Cynics and the Chesterfield Kings are the best out there at the moment. Outrageous Cherry is a great psychedelic band. Some current bands that I really like, who are not really garage bands, include the Cocktail Slippers, Chevelles, Prima Donna, and Nick Curran and the Lowlifes.

There were a bunch of other bands that I could have named, but most of them have broken up, turned to shit, or are on the dreaded "hiatus."
Alotta great bands out there just now keepin it loud and gnarly. Los Peyotes, Unnatural Helpers, White Hills, The Black Lips, Friends of the Light Machine, Man or Astroman to name a few. The podcasts are a great place to keep it real and up to date. Check'em out!
Really likin this new cd I bought used last week theGo-Whatcha Doin'. I saw them live a few times opening for other bands here and there, so I decided to risk $7 for the cd. Glad I did!

Chesterfield Kings are a favorite of mine, but are pretty well known I would think. I'm trying to figure out more of the lesser known bands of the last 5 or 10 years.
the jim jones revue are sorta like a white and wild little richard, the spook lights are pretty cool crampy garage from kansas i think
Ty Segall, King Khan (all of his bands), CoCoComa, Black Lips, The White Wires, Moonhearts, Personal & the Pizzas, The Spits, Bad Sports, Wax Museums, Cheap Time, Jacuzzi Boys, Fungi Girls, Wau y los Arrrghs!!!, Thee Fine Lines, The Unwed Teenage Mothers
Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees are both great. Still need to get that Bad Sports lp.
The Urges from Dublin.
Enough said!

www.myspace.com/theurges - for tunes.
I like the Half-Rats from Chicago/Lafayette. The Slurs were from Indy, but broke up a couple years ago. Wish I knew of more midwestern stuff.
The podcasts are fantastic!! you will become hooked right away!! I read this thread because it seems there are a lot of purists in some of the other threads and they know a lot more about garage and I'm not always sure what is new and what is old. I have just begun to explore the chuck full archives of garage rock..this is definately a cool place to school yerself!!
Oooh, so many good bands new and old.
Go to some record labels like Goner or In The Red to get a good head-start. They both have a pretty hefty dose of garage to make your ears bleed.
I'm already familiar with lots of great bands. Not trying to school myself. Just trying to find more current bands worth checking out. A few that I liked that were more recent were the Richmond Sluts, Riffs, Clone Defects, Detroit Cobras. I usually favor bands that I can't tell aren't from 1966, 70s or earlier, or a strange distant rocknroll universe. Anything usually that sounds or looks like it is from 80-now I usually don't want. Even a little' smidgeon of new usually throws off the whole recipe to my taste. I just am trying to take a shortcut sort of. I'm not trying to be so hard to please either. I just want the sound I crave, and also to see the live action.
I like The Urges as well. Also Thee Vicars, Wau Y Los Argghs, Los Peyotes, and for the last 16 years, the Woggles. the Love Me Nots are also great.

RJFait replied to Reverend Stevee Ray's discussion the Beatles ... why NOT ?
"The Fabulous Wailers, The Leaves, The 13th Floor Elevators and The Seeds would have been some heavy shit with or without the Beatles. Would the Beatles have been nearly as heavy without them? I find that very doubtful. The Beatles were a pop…"

RJFait replied to Reverend Stevee Ray's discussion the Beatles ... why NOT ?
"I don't hate the Beatles, I just think the bulk of their work was gutless pop. At some point in the middle they started getting better drugs or something and put out a few good records. Then, they went right back to gutless pop."

"Yes, both pushing 70, and the last time I saw Charlie he was practically dying from the flu and still performed with more energy and rocked harder than just about any other punk singer I've seen of any age. Iggy Pop is 25 years older than I am…"
