Permalink Reply by Jeremy Kitchen on December 3, 2010 at 3:10pm I don't even know what "garage" is any more. 99% of the bands most people call garage would never fall under that category with me or anybody I know. It seems that a lot of the new "garage" bands are more punk than garage with nary a 60s garage influence. A good chunk of the "garage rock" bands seem to have a higher than normal percentage of facial hair as well (still don't know when beards became cool for anybody but bikers; with the amount of denim, flannel and facial hair some of these bands have, you'd think they were BTO cover bands). Punk has somehow become a dirty word and bands that would normally be called punk bands now seem to call themselves garage (maybe it just sounds cooler). When I see bands like Teenanger called a garage band, it just confuses me. They're noisy punk, not garage. I would never consider Nobunny garage (though I do like them). I also hate the term "garage rock" which I never heard in heavy use until the 90s (it was always garage punk before that to differentiate it from 77 punk; pre-77 it was punk!). The bands that everybody calls "garage rock" all seem to be the ones I really fucking hate (White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, Jet, Hives, Black Keys, etc The list is nearly endless) and a lot that are just boring (Strange Boys, Demon's Claws). There are plenty of new bands that are good and very few that I would actually consider "garage". I would never consider The Paybacks a garage band but they are a great band nonetheless. There are plenty that are close to garage but I can't fucking stand (King Khan tops that list - don't see what the big deal is and his whole persona is fucking irritating). Newer/Recent stuff that I like that is garage or in that vein (just looking at the pile by my computer): The Higher State (Mole's bands have always been ace!), The Woggles, Fleshtones, Los Explosivos, Thee Vicars, Ugly Beats, Cynics, Baby Woodrose, The Frowning Clouds, The Hentchmen, David Peter and The Wilde Sect, The Wildebeests, Thanes, The Revellions, Los Peyotes, Reigning Sound...There's more but I can't think of 'em off that top of my head. I probably get 150-200 promos a month and all but 8-10 are complete shit with 3 or 4 being keepers. My new band could probably be called garage but we're avoiding that tag like the plague - it's a goddamn albatross these days.
How can you hate the detroit cobras? I thought they were pretty good. I don't just like garage bands. How 'bout underground rock bands, anything rockin' thats not just a typical mainstream radio "modern rock", heavy metal or deuchey-rap/rock sound is of interest. I never said the paybacks were garage either. Who cares.
I agree that the hives/white-keys/jet/blackstripes/, are dogshit but I liked the Detroit Cobras. F-U- buddy or else explain how you can call them crap. I don't understand whats not to like about a band like them, especially since you say you liked the paybacks.

FU? Really? Wow. I can call them crap because I hate them and I don't have to justify my opinion to you, just as you don't have to justify yours to me. And I really don't owe you any kind of explanation. We're all free to like what we want and it doesn't matter if other people don't approve of or agree with our choices (and anybody that cares what others think is really sad). Every song they do has been done better by somebody else and I really hate Rachel's voice. Period. I've seen them several times and have listened to their stuff and gave them every chance. Can't stand them. And you really can't compare The Paybacks and The Detroit Cobras - two ENTIRELY different sounding bands.

I really just wanted to make sure that The Duke here was aware of the group The Paybacks. I wasn't trying to start an anal debate about the definition of garage rock. I thought they fit well enough in to the category since they are featured in the film "It Came From Detroit" which is about the "Detroit garage rock scene" and they're not punk, grunge or power pop. I figured they were close enough to bring up in this discussion. Anyway I don't understand the nit picky argument about what's garage and what's not garage. I mean if somebody said Avril Lavigne was punk I could understand getting your panties in a wad. Other than that, let it go.
Peace

No not really, fair enough but you put them in the same category as some totally S-H-I-T bands. As far as the "garage" term being overused Trends come and go though. I kinda think the term is rather dumb in the first place though because if you play pre-hippie 60s rock and dont live in a doll house you may not even have a garage so what does that make it called? Living room rock? No wait, how 'bout bathroom rock?

Yah! Melbourne has an amazing scene right now. I saw Eddy Current in San Francisco when they opened for Thee Oh Sees and they blew my mind! Some guy sent me a recording of the show, I attached it on here hopefully it works, this is probably the best rendition of Tuning Out i've heard.

All bands you and your friends should check out, Melbournes Garage Punk scene is picking up right now.
Kick Asss man, HIGH 5 for not being a hipster snob. I tell people about bands whenever I think somebodies interested so I appreciate the same treatment. I only know about older Australian bands mostly so current ones are of interest for sure. Cheers with a Stroh's!

Permalink Reply by ixnayray on December 18, 2010 at 6:47pm Duke, there are tons of great new AND old bands out there that you, them and us have never even heard yet. Pretty much every Podcast on this site plays a great mix of stuff. It's free - you can listen to the shows, subscribe to the shows, keep them and play them as often as you like. It's a great way to find bands that you can invest money in at a later date. That has to be better than risking your bucks on a band because they have a cool name, or because someone else on here likes them. Also, yes, i'm aware that not EVERYONE comes here for the Podcasts but if you are curious about finding new bands then the casts are exactly what you should be checking out.
Personally, the 'newest' bands i've been into lately have been The Jim Jones Revue, The Crusaders Of Love and The Movie Star Junkies. I've played all these bands on my Way Past Cool Podcast and I know other podcasters have played them too. Fuck it - By the time you've downloaded every show available on this site you'd probably never need to buy music ever again [you still should though].
Yeah, but then I have to listen to these 4inch tin can computer speakers.
