That would have been my all time favourite gig if I had seen it, was that an outdoor show?.......I am hideously jealous.
I like the Thanes by the way, saw you play at the ARK in Edinburgh a couple of years back :)

Permalink Reply by Johnny Bean on January 10, 2011 at 7:12am No, I live in Zurich, but I lived in Edinburgh between 2007-2009. An old pal of mine Craig F. tipped me off about the Thanes being from Edinburgh, I have a feeling I also saw you play in London about 20 years ago (Clarendon maybe?) but the alcohol intake of those days tends to blur the memory. I played some gigs in Edinburgh with a band called Kurtz including one with Shock and Awe who small world I saw playing with the Scars guitarist a couple of times when i was there,I always loved "Author Author". I also had holidays in Edinburgh as a kid, I was a bit young for the Dead Boys/Damned in 1977, i did see the Tourists play in a record shop on Cockburn Street in probably 1978. The Clash and Suicide that must have been amazing. I saw the Clash in 1981 that should also have been on my all time greats list :)

Hey Johnny Bean, cheers for the awareness of us Thanes. So I take it you live here in Scotland then? No, The Damned and Dead Boys show was inside at one of the main punk venues at that time, the old Clouds venue in Tollcross area of Edinburgh, not long before Christmas 1977. It later became the Coasters and Network venues...while the '78 Anti-Nazi Carnival was held outside in Craigmaillar Park. The Clash were supposed to be the main headliners, but of course the band themselves said they knew nothing about it and it was seen just as a scam to get loadsa punters there, which happened of course. The Deleted (pre-Visitors), The Delinx (Dunfermline way I believe), the Scars, Aswad and a few others were the main attraction for us punks. Was a great day, but culminated in a few of us getting chased through Edinburgh bus station by neds, not teds - as had become the norm on Saturday afternoons - but just neds, anti-punks, whatever...Another pretty amazing gig around that time would've been The Clash supported by Suicide at Dunfermline Kinema Ballroom. Most of the punks absolutely hated Suicide, didn't know what to make of them so just kept coming forward and gobbing on them and shouting poofs, faggots etc etc...I wasn't one of them though and thoroughly enjoyed them, especially the writhing and screeching spectacle of Frankie Teardrop!!!!!!

Would that've been Craig Ferguson then? He who beez in Spain now. Well if it was the Clarendon then it would've been the pre-Thanes group The Green Telescope as I do remember playing there in about 1984-5. Wow, funnily enough just saw Shock and Awe opening for the reunited Scars on Dec 29 at Edinburgh's HMV Picture House (the old Caley cinema in Lothian Rd. where I saw R.E.M. on their 2nd UK trek back in '85). I gotta say the Scars were totally amazing with their original pre- Author! Author! LP line-up...but they did do a fair bit of said album. I do like the album but it ain't a patch on how they sounded before they made records, and up to about their third single Love Song! They played (Shock and Awe too) a short set at the aftershow party round the corner at the Citrus Club in Grindlay St...Rezillos and Human League'er Jo Callis jumped onstage too and they did a couple of Johnny Thunders cuts, Chinese Rocks and You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory; havin already done Born To Lose with Scars' guitarist Paul Research and singer Robert King aka Rab King aka Rab Allan. An awesome night for sure, pure dead Horrorshow you might say with hunners of original punks in attendance, many of whom hadn't said a word to each other since the heady days of 1979-80...

Yes thats the Craig. I was a regular at the Clarendon/Klub Foot between about 1983-1987 so it could well have been that show. The Scars show sounds fantastic wish I had been there, I know the band already formed in 1977 but I have never heard any early stuff they did. I love that song Yesterdays Kids which Murray and Paul Research have been doing, I think we can all relate to that :) This post has dredged up a lot of memories of all the great gigs I saw at the Clarendon ballroom (Ramones,Johnny Thunders, Gun Club, Scientists) , also sitting on the stage at Hammersmith Palais next to Peter Bucks guitar amp on the REM tour you mentioned. My own band did a spontaneous Born To Lose on New Years Eve it always goes down well. I sent you a friend request on MySpace by the way :)

1) Fleshtones a long time ago
2) Fleshtones recently and any time imbettween.
3) KISS some time back in the 70's when I was very young.
Kiss for a short while called themselves "the worlds biggest punk band" and it was indeed memorable so I guess that could count
Otherwise I would say one of the times I saw Bad Brains.

2. Ministry/KMFDM 1990 about 100 people at the show. So much testosternone.
1. Fleshtones 1985 in a small club in Tampa. It was like a giant house party and Peter Zaremba was the host. A drunken, sweaty bacchanalia.
