What do you use to get that garage sound? Guitars, amps, mics, recorders, organs, drums, tambourines, or anything else .. Go!

As lead singer with no musical talent my guys would tell you more about what they use but this what we like to bring for our gigs:
- guitar: Danelectro Lire and (the classic) Vox AC30
- bass: Danelectro Lire, Selmer Amp on 60's Vox Bass cabinet
- drums: we used several kits but we recently play live with and Olympic kit as far as I can remember
- mics: set of 60's Sure Mics (can't remember the model but I can remember their great warm sound)

As far as I am concerned:
- Hohner Blues harp, Century Percussion half moon tambourine (nothing very exciting) and two sets of cheap maracas that I hold in one hand (looks more garagie and less "salsa")

Telecaster-- mutt but all Fender parts. Someday I'll be pushing this guitar in a shopping cart.
Rickenbaker 330/12-- too many barnacles to be useable, but it was only $400 to begin with.

Sola Sound Wah Wah-- Dad gave this to me on the condition that I never quit playing
Dan Echo-- Cost me all of $20, never use it.
Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster-- I kinda stole this. Dude borrowed it to me and never asked for it back. At this point it's been two years and two cities, so I'll probably sell it for a fuzz box.

Roland VG-4 amp-- dropped off the truck at Mars Music (remember them?), bought it for $50 because the speakers in Roland amps are great. Turns out the on/off switch and the cabinet were the only broken things. It has a million bells & whistles, but I usually just set it to a "tweed" setting and let it be.

Ibanez "Gio" bass-- First electric instrument, I'm irrationally attached to this thing
Rickenbaker 4001-- 1979. It's very nice, but I've never connected with this bass. It's in the care of my parents as it's accruing some worth.
Ibanez "ATK" bass-- bought while I was in high school, going to sell this soon as it's too damn heavy to play.

It's about ten years that I don't play with a band anymore,but lately I'm going to record something
by my own.So I bought some necessary engine machines to add at the old equipment: .

-Gibson Les Paul custom black '78
-Fender Telecaster USA (recently bought for that dry Kinks-like sound that I love)
-Fender Jazzmaster Japan crafted (good sounds especially clean)

-Fender junior pro 15 (Ideal if you need to play at home)
-Fender sidekick 25 solid state

-Sovtek Big Muff-Boss DS1-MXR distorsion (If you?re looking for fuzz sound, one of these 3 it's good enough for me,using a wah pedal to set the tone,instead of looking for rare and expensive vintage stomps)
-Dunlop Cry Baby
-EHX-Holy Grail reverb (expensive but excellent if you don't have a real sprig one)
-EHX-Wiggler-A kind of vibrato-tremolo-rotary with a two 12AX7 valves;if you put it at the end of the chain(with no need to be switched on),will improve your sound in general.
-EHX DeLuxe MemoryMan-It's a good delay with very weird options to experiment,but if you need to set it for a classic slapback,try something less expensive.

-A Beyer Dynamic and a Shure mics

Recently I took a Fostex 16 Track digital recorder,and a DR880 Boss drum machine... maybe not the ideal for the LO-FI style and attitude..but you spare a drummer and lot of time sometimes.

Effects:
a fuckin butt load of pedals. I'm not going to list them, a mix of vintage and newer shit.

My gear I have at the moment.

- Gretsch Electromatic Corvette: This was just inside my price range at the time. It's a good guitar and I felt like I could get decent single coil and humbucker sounds out of it. The Gretsch style pickups are a bit brighter and twangier than Gibson style humbuckers.

-Epiphone Blues Custom 30: I got a really good deal on this on craigslist. It's a pretty nice amp. My only issues with it would be that the clean channel is a little darker than I like (still really good but I would like a little more chime and twang for the cleans.) and also the reverb isn't Fendery enough for me. It can do the Marshally Ramones thing well though.

-Silvertone 1484 head: I waited for months to find a decent price for this. They've really gone up in the past few years. I don't have a cab for it yet but it sounded great the times I have gotten to plug it up.

-Proco Rat 2 : I won this in an online giveaway. It doesn't quite give me the fuzz tones I'm after but it's fun to play with. It works well for a good boost or to induce some feedback.

-Harmony Bobkat: Got it really cheap from a friend. It's exactly what you need for a "garage" sound. It needs new tuners and a new output jack though.

-1964 Univox 335 copy: It's actually completely hollow more like a Casino. It has the coolest greenburst color. This was also really cheap but I had to rewire it and the neck has a bit of a warp.

I'm hoping to get something to fill my fuzz desires. I haven't decided what that's gonna be yet. I'll also need to something to fill my lack of good reverb at some point.

[The Experiments]

My band The Experiments just released our new album, that we recorded ourselves. You can find it at our website for free: http://theexperiments.com

We used the following gear:

We recorded in Pro Tools with a Project Mix I/O (8 channels) and 2 more channels though a ART DPS II into the Project Mix's ADAT in.

We used the following mics (drums):

Overheads: Oktava MK-012-01 (pair)
Kick: AKG D112
Snare: Shure SM57 (under)
Rack Tom R: Sennheiser e609 silver
Rack Tom L: Audix f10
Floor Tom: AKG D11/XLR
High Hat: CAD pencil condenser

The snare we did under because no matter where we put it over, the drummer hit it with his stick. That's also a big reason we used the Sennheiser on the tom, it's low profile kept it from getting hit. In retrospect, I think miking the snare under gave us too thin a sound.

The guitars we did in the same room (different day), with the Sennheiser on one speaker and a Shure SM-7b on another.

Vocals were done in a bathroom with the Shure SM7b

We're on a budget (who isn't) and that was the best we could afford.

Guitars:
Gretsch 6119 Tennesee Rose, changed the guts out of it, pups etc.
Tele - US Made late 90's model, probably my most used guitar currently.
MIJ Strat - Don't seem to use this too much but you always need a strat + a fuzz face.
Burns 12 String - Love this guitar. Jangles quite nicely , it also holds it's tune incredibly well.
Maton EB Electric - Latest edition, a vintage 60's Australian built guitar. Does the garage tone quite well.

Amps:

Hot Rod 2x12 Deville
Blues Junior

I'm on the market for a Silvertone 1448, Vox AC30 & a Ep8 ( or there abouts ) Tiesco hollowbody. I'm thinking of offloading the Deville even though it's quite the amp. I see to alternate through pedals which I have way to many. These days I mostly use a Boss SD-1, Baja Bone Bender, MXR Line Driver & A Digitech Delay.
