I've never actually read any of his books, but I've been intrigued by them quite a few times. He's just one of those authors I've always passed on at the last minute in favor of something else.
So, if I were to start reading some Crews, what would be the best one to start with? In your humble opinions, of course!
Thanks in advance.

It's the first thing I read and it got me hooked on his themes and styles. Even if you don't click with it, at the price you can pick up a used copy, it's no big deal to pass it on to someone else.

Permalink Reply by Bibliodiscoteque on July 25, 2011 at 7:15am I'd start with Cars or Celebration. Celebration is raunchy and magical. Car was the first one I read and a great 'gateway' drug as the story isn't too far out there. Either way, you win.
Permalink Reply by Root Doctor on July 29, 2011 at 2:10pm I've liked Crews's non-fiction a great deal. His memoir, "A Childhood," is an unflinching look at rural southern life, and his collection, "Blood and Grits," is equally unsettling.
