What are your favorite of the current crop of surf/instro bands out there today? Any new ones you're excited about? Post 'em here (and please refrain from blatantly promoting your own band... at least in THIS thread)!
Los Straitjackets, Lost Acapulco (when they don't sing), Slacktone, Shi-tones(side project of Jim Thomas of the Mermen), Longboards, Blue Hawaiians, Surf Coasters, The Nebulas, The Verbtones, The Ghastly Ones, Dynotones.
Several from Japan, Spain and Sweden but can't think of all the names...
I think Eddie Angel and Danny Amis have carried the Surf/Instro torch better than most....
I'd say the best new (to me) surf band I've seen in the last couple of years would have to be Gein and the Graverobbers. High energy metal influenced horror surf. Also they look like they just walked out of the movie "Carnival of souls" and that is awesome. Other really good surf bands I've seen lately would be the nebulas, Hot Rod Fury and the East Coast Tremors. I finally got to see the Ghastly Ones this summer and they really blew me away too.
They still get together and play occasionally. Mel, Deke Dickerson, and Garret from the Ghastly Ones were playing some shows with Nokie Edwards as "Venturesmania" last year, too... not sure if they're still doing that or not, though.
Wow, really? I've heard Gein and the Graverobbers and, well, I just don't like them. At all, in fact. Snoozeville. Different strokes for different folks, I guess, huh? I do like the Nebulas, though. Bitch Boys, Thunderchiefs, AquaSonics, The Windows (Japan), and The Sadies are also great.
I listened to the Ghastly Ones a little bit, but never got too into them, but then I saw them live and I was hooked. The Nebulas played right before them, but I wasn't too into them. I really wanted to like them and I got excited when they came out wearing skull masks and all, but I was just really bored through their whole set.
In fact I had them play my very first REAL BOSS HOSS show back in 2003 and again last summer with a special guest appearance by THE GO NUTS (their first Los Angeles appearance in over 10 years!). It was quite a magical night with Mike Lucas performing "Golden Turd" for the first time ever!
Wow, I wish I had seen that. that sounds amazing. I got to play a show with the Ghastly ones when they came out east and they closed with a kick ass verison of the sonics "he's waiting". Dave who plays organ got behind the kit like in the old Bomboras and Go-nuts days and Norman sang it.
