I don't know if my music is really "garage punk"... it might be more like "basement punk." Actually, let's get this out here right now... I am completely DUMBFOUNDED at the plethora of "labels" for ROCK N ROLL music. I am at a LOSS. I try out different labels on for size. "Rock." hm. Too vague? "Garage" -- wait, is garage music supposed to be fast? 1-4-5? Or just suitable to play in a garage. Shit. My music is neither. 'Cause I play in the garage, the neighbors complain. (The basement is ok if the windows are shut and no one is upstairs.) But yet... "garage" also implies a certain shitty "balls out don't care" attitude that I embrace, as well as an expectation that your bandmates are willing to rehearse your originals for love over money, which is an expectation I have. "Grunge?" Oh gee. This is problematic on SO MANY levels, implying a time-period and trendiness, over-hyped and uncool. Occasionally I try to embrace the term... and then I feel stupid, like one of those people you see at a rock show, 50 pounds overweight but still insisting on sporting their super-tight pegged black jeans... no offense to anyone who fits that description... I was "grunge" before grunge was cool. And after. Not so much during... This brings me to my favorite descriptive genre for my music which is PUNK ROCK. Of course, when *I* say "punk rock" I mean: "I am playing exactly what I feel like playing at any given moment, with whatever musical gear is suiting my fancy, be it spoons, rocks, buckets, or (my favorite) an old electric guitar." Or, as Kurt Cobain more succinctly put it: "freedom." I play freedom rock. I am one who says that punk rock is folk music. It is the music of the people. Folk... punk. You don't "combine" punk rock with anything. It's either punk, or it's not. This is the way of the old bluesmen and the reason why the old blues guys could all play the same song and not sound anything alike. Hendrix was the most unique bluesguy I can think of, and to me, he was PUNK. I play PUNK fucking ROCK. I don't care what you call it. If that disturbs genre purists, so be it. I like rock n' roll. End of story.
