His 'Play in a Day' books sold over 1 million copies. He will be missed!I have been collecting Bert Weedon 7'' records over the past year after 1st hearing his talented pluckings on British Instrumental compilations. I am gutted he has passed away. He had a good innings though. 91 years is not bad. There are a sadly only a few videos of him on Youtube. Tonight I got out my British Instro 45 box and played a few faves. John Barry 7, Sounds Incorporated, The Tornados, and the twangy, corny,…See More

Profile Information

Bio:
Groups may come and go but the Hi Class Joes are here to stay!

Virtually unknown outside the West Country, although not for much longer, the Joes possess a dynamism and polish on a par with the top recording stars.

The group's manager Richard Down insisted on producing their first disc, the extremely catchy Boom Boom (Everybody Fall Down), after catching the band at their monthly residency at the Locarno in Bristol. The sound on the disc could almost have been taken from their live stage show. Full of energy and drive - the song bounces along until the last ringing chord.

Five guys named Joe

Joe James (Lead vocals)
Tried various jobs in industry but didn't take to them, so great was his love for music. Joe James' full-blooded knockout vocals are a Hi Class Joes trademark. His favourite food is shepherd's pie.

Joe Crabtree (Lead guitar and close harmonies)
An ex-choir boy who gave up a promising career in office accounting to play guitar for the Hi Class Joes. Also an electronics boffin - when not playing guitar he spends his time tinkering with the band's amplifers and PA equipment.

Joe Ash (Bass and backing vocals)
Worked as a costing clerk and storeman before turning professional. Joe Ash has played in numerous local beat combos, he left his last group after hearing the Joes were on the lookout for a bass player. His favourite drink is Cola.

Joe “Cookie” Cook (Drums)
Left his career as head chef on an international cruise ship to play drums for the Joes. Enjoys collecting records by instrumental groups and reading science fiction. His favourite drink is Dandelion and Burdock.

Joe Lynch (Harmonica and backing vocals)
Turned professional following a career as an insurance salesman. Originally from London, Joe Lynch can often be found playing blues harp at various R&B sessions across Bristol. His favourite drink is a pint of mild.

What the press say about the Joes...

“Listen to their sound, watch them onstage and experience that small excitement which then gets bigger inside you. The Hi Class Joes are going to be one of the best bands on the scene for many years.”
Lord William of Buckinghamshire, Big New Beat magazine

“The fans in the theatre have a fire in their eyes. With an almost contemptuous ease, the Hi Class Joes hit the stage and slam the audience back into their seats. They finished their set of R&B-type numbers with the audience standing and screaming on their seats, begging for more.”
Reverend John Charles, Beat Sounds magazine

“Sensational. Brilliant. Out of this world. Just some of the phrases I overheard when leaving the auditorium theatre. With their lively discs, exciting stage performances and hilarious radio shows - everything is positively swinging for the Joes!”
Maureen Cox, Boyfriend magazine
Favorite Music/Influences (list some bands, musicians, genres, etc.):
The Big Three, Johnny Kid and the Pirates, The AppleJacks, The Hollies, Adam Faith,
Other Hobbies/Interests:
Motorcycles, vintage record fairs, cooking, cycling, vintage clothes, getting drunk.

Tropic of Cancer/Delta of Venus

I believe I am posting way too much but without all the fistfights and kids jumping out of (1st floor)  windows because of summer break I am a bit bored. Anyway, there was a Henry Miller discussion in this group recently and while watching After Hours for research purposes last night Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller came up. I took that to be a bit of a sign. The most impressive thing about Henry Miller was his ability to riff on any given subject for five minutes or five hours at a time.…See More
