In 2004, when four employees of IBM (Portuguese for Institute of Marine Biology - do not confuse with the computer company) theorized about the monotony of sea life from the waters of Guanabara Bay, no one could have thought that such calm days were counted. The tsunami of sound that was to come borrowed its name from an old project of the institute guarded until the early twenty-first century: Project of Atomic Zoomorphism in Unfavorable Zones Under the Sea. Or simply, PAZUZUS.
Gradually the sound waves from the institute's sonars began losing ground to the sound of the reverberating guitars of the newly formed group. Instead of test tubes, amp valves. Instead of endless research and complicated reports, rock records. Or rather, INSTRO SURF ROCK records!
In 2005, extending DIY spirit to its ultimate limits, A MALDIÇÃO DO SURF SUMÉRIO (CURSE OF THE SUMERIAN SURF) was the first record of the group. Recorded in a 100% homemade style and without any worries about labels, it basked in the adulation of many. From journalist Marcos Bragatto ("The strongest of these guys are the well conceived melodies, and songs that even instrumental, carry a great pop appeal. Examples are 'There's the Pazuzu In My Garage' and 'Os Olhos Sangrentos da Mãe Madrid', which are by far among the best compositions of surf music ever made in Brazil "- rockemgeral.com.br) to world surf music guru Phil Dirt ("This is a fine and fluid uplifting epic surf with an optimistic if not bright sound" - reverbcentral.com), many people surrendered to the persuasive and captivating sound of OS PAZUZUS.
Their first gig came in 2006, in the 6th edition of Primeiro Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe, the largest festival of Brazilian instrumental music. The impact was so good that soon after, other classics stages became the setting for some anthological sound incursions of OS PAZUZUS. A tour alongside The Dead Rocks, national idols of the style, completed the first year of life of the group.
In 2007, more shows. OS PAZUZUS would be the first band to play a Riobilly Fest, an event responsible for igniting the fire of rockabilly in Rio de Janeiro. An invitation to be in the Portuguese compilation Brazilian Surf A-Go-Go on 12" vinyl followed. The record brings together the leading Brazilian bands of the genre.
Since then, much reverb, including another Campeonato Mineiro de Surfe in 2008, an appearance on Bar AKA, a movie from local director Tulio Bambino, a new member, and an EP titled HIBERNATION DEVICE TURNOFF!!! that opens the seas to the next experiments of the band to be revealed in 2012.
Prepare your buoys and lifeboats! The beaches of Rio de Janeiro will never be the same!
Whats up yall, I am a pirate radio dj on a station in northern California called Humboldt Free Radio Alliance. I do a 2 hour show every week and want to do an entire show of one man garage bands. Any one have any suggestions? I have a few already: bbq, King Lollipop and Dead Elvis. Any suggestions of who to check out would be great. See More
