So guess what was on sale for 3.99 at FYE today? The soundtrack to the 1991 classic film Singles. Okay, the soundtrack was probably better known, however, I'd say this album's perfect for dreary months like January.
1) Would-Alice in Chains: I'll be honest:I'm not a big fan of these guys and sort of perfer the standard fair of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. That said, Layne's gruff, projective vocals make this song really good. It really puts you in the setting of a rainy late afternoon in Seattle.

So today I purchased Ladies and Gentleman, the fabulous stains making the total of my ever growing punk related dvd collection to..5. Anyway, the young Diane Lane is really good in this, especially the opening scene. The rest is all right and it's fun to hear Steve Jones,Paul Cook, and Paul Simion cuss at each other in thick british slang.

So y'see a few weeks ago this kid named Willy Graves passed away. This young fella was the bassist for the plot to blow up the eiffel tower. Yup, that's the actual band name. Anywho, I downloaded one of their albums avaliable here: http://justanotherkidonthebeat.blogspot.com/2008/09/rip-willy-graves.html (Scroll a little and there's a link to mediafire download)
And guess what folks? They're pretty grand! Not too gritty, but they have a really great clangy sound to em. Did I mention they do a co…

In my mind, there were three sorts of personality types within the punk/post-punk boom of 77:
neurotic sensitive art school kids: Television, Talking Heads, Buzzcocks, Richard Hell, David Bowie (His Berlin period), Joy Division
Lovable, sometimes horny dumbbells: Ramones, Dead Boys, The Damned, Johnny Thunders and the heartbreakers
Sardonic, angry youths: The Clash, Sex Pistols, Sioxuise and the Banshees, Crass, The No Wave crowd

It's rainy, there's no coca-cola, you watched this sketch that made you laugh and cringe at the same time: http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/palin-hillary-open/656281
So what's a kid to do? Why, listen to some live dead kennedys stuff of course! I particulary reccomend this one: http://community.livejournal.com/funhouse_x/7415.html
For the longest time, I tried to figure out who was the American version of the Sex Pistols: Some say it was the dead boys, but to me, they were jus…

Set your kids in front of the computer monitor because it's time a young man by the name of Ian Mackaye and his good friend Amy taught them about vowels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhNbaMJNA50

It's making me delete some music files that I may've wanted to listen to a bit more, but then again, I think you can only listen to a Screamers live show bootleg only once (avaliable here: http://commercialzone.blogspot.com/2007/09/screamers-in-better-world-2001.html) I mean, it's awesome, but like the Lord of The Rings films, you can't go back to them again and again that easily. What other punk band has keyboards?! And there's something so endearng about how Du Plenty says "hey there" before goin…

So I've been on a 70s L.A. punk kick lately and discovered that my favorite of X's first three albums is Wild Gift. Oh, Los Angeles is a classic, don't get me wrong, but something about this album makes it so damn good and I dunno what. Maybe it's because it captures the gritty urban environment they had to survive in. Yet, John Doe and Exene C coped because had each other: this sentiment is expressed in my two favorite songs In this house that I call home and Some Other Time. Actually, now that…

I was on vacation last week and I couldn't think of anything music related to post, but now:
Best songs off of Richard Hell's Blank Generation (aside from the title song):
1) Love comes in Spurts (I actually like this better than Blank generation honestly)
2) Another World
3) Down at the rock n roll club
4) Liars Beware
The praise for this album comes from somethin that's a pet peeve of mine: it seems that it's called a classic just cos of Blank Generation and Love comes in spurts. I beg yo…

Dear God, I'm frantic over the recent happenings among the Dead Kennedys:
First, the current singer guy leaves over a row about the band's future and according to him, they hired another singer behind his back: http://www.punknews.org/article/28168 And the little comment from David Cruz doesn't help.
Second, Klaus Flouride quits cos of angioderma: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Kennedys#Reforming_of_new_band_line-up
And then there's this article: http://www.punknews.org/article/25621

Okay, so I downloaded and listened to a bit of Tom Waits' storytellers and though I loved the way he talks and very much enjoy his sense of humor, I just cannot get past his singing voice. I want to like him: his pressance is cool, his personality is endearing,but..but.. Ah hell, I guess it's that I like everything about him but his singing!

Mudhoney: Okay, so I would say Super Fuzz Big Muff is the best record for people who are ignorant of grunge; it sounds more sabbathy compared to Nirvana and much more trippy. As an aside, I'd say the best to way to introduce folks to this genre is to do the following:
1) play them a Black Sabbath album
2) Play em some Stooges, preferably the Fun House record cos it's got more slow songs
3) THEN, put on this record.
In the case of Nirvana, do the following
1) play a bit of Black Flag's My Wa…
