Ning Forum Changes on the Horizon?

Several Ning network creators (including myself) have been trying for months now to convince Ning to make some changes to the format of their discussion forums. Just wanted to post an update that it appears they are listening and I just received word that some of the more popular functionalities found in phpBB forums such as linear posting, new message (since your last visit) alerts and a quoting feature are being considered and they are "definitely looking at ways to offer more flexible forum view options, as well as quote functionality." There is no ETA on it but it's on the roadmap and they are supposed to report back once they know more.

Yeah, this forum is a bit like a maze in that it's hard to see the new posts.
I much prefer the style of phpBB forums .

FINALLY!!

Hello there!

We wanted to let you know that we are rolling out a new release to your network on Ning this Thursday, June 5, from 9 to 9:15 p.m. Your network will be offline during this brief window.

There are a number of features in this release, including:

1) Forum Improvements. In addition to a redesigned forum, you will now have the option to choose between two styles of threads: "Flat," where replies are shown in chronological order, or "Threaded," where replies are indented below the post or the reply that they respond to.

2) Allow members to customize their My Page layout. Members will now be able to drag-and-drop modules around their profile pages. If you'd like to disable this option - or the ability for members to make any appearance changes - you can do this too.

3) Enhanced Widget Distribution. You and your members can easily spread your network's badges, widgets, individual videos and photo album slideshows to MySpace, Facebook and 15 other popular destinations without the need to copy and paste HTML embed code.

To learn more about this release, check out: http://preview.ning.com

Thanks!
The Ning Team

can you ask them to make them "not suck"?

I really miss the old format.

OK, the flat (linear or chronoligical) forum style is now in place here on the Hideout, but I was a bit annoyed that they still haven't implemented any kind of quoting function, so I've made a "New Feature Wishlist" request for that and we'll see how long it takes them to get around to adding it. Hopefully other network creators will request the same thing which may spur them along to add it more sooner than later.

In case you didn't notice, Ning finally implemented a quoting feature. Just click the "Reply to This" link in the post you want to "cite" (or quote) and post your response. Voila!
